History
Under the Continental Forum Hotel lie, from the excavations of 1988–1989, remains of an amphitheatre and a basilica from the second to fifth centuries. The access gate toward the arena was found, and pieces of the track on which the gladiators fought — so far, the only one of this kind attested at Tomis.
An inscription brings in Skirtos Dakensis, a name that leads toward Dacia, not toward an ordinary local family. In the fourth century, over or beside the spectacle structure, a basilica appeared: the city was changing its public, from arena to Christian assembly.
Ask at the hotel reception if the basement space is open; it is not always. If it is, you go down ten minutes and come out again into the street, without remaking your whole day’s programme.
