History

Beside Lake Sinoe and the fortress of Histria, the village of Istria keeps its church half in the ground. It was built in the second half of the nineteenth century, around 1864, when a church was not allowed to exceed the height of a mosque: the solution was to dig, to lower the nave, to leave the roof low.

The dedications are the Holy Trinity and Saint Hierarch Nicholas. The interior is cool, scraped, with country icons. If you catch a service, stay at the back; otherwise, ask for the key in the village - often a person from the council holds it, not a guide.

Pair the stop with Histria, a few kilometres away. In summer it is hard without water; in spring, the wind off Sinoe cuts. Do not climb on the roof to “see how buried it is”: it shows from the gate.
