History

In front of the National Institute for Marine Research and Development on Boulevard Mamaia no. 300 stands, since 1958, the bust of Grigore Antipa. Milița Petrașcu modelled it; the man in bronze is the biologist (1867-1944) who set marine research on its feet here and whose name the institute bears.

It is not a monument of the tourist promenade. You see it if you have business in the north of the city or if you go to an institute event. The plinth is low, the scale is human, the inscription is readable from the pavement.

If you are more interested in the man than in the bronze, remember that his museum in Bucharest is another place. Here, in Constanța, it is only the head at the gate, set where his intellectual workplace was.
