History

Ion Bănescu (1850-1909) was mayor only between 1905 and 1907, but in those two years he pushed the systematisation of the streets, the seafront, the link toward Mamaia and works that took Constanța out of the logic of an Ottoman market town. The bust was worked by Dimitrie Paciurea, in the years after the mayor's death, with delays typical of the age: talks of site, money, then the war of 1916.

You look for it on the route among Mircea cel Bătrân, Griviței and the area of the Dormition of the Mother of God church, not on the promenade seafront. It is a short halt, good to join to a turn through the civic centre of 1900. If you want context, look also at the Palace of Justice on Traian: it is the same generation of town.
