History
In 1846, monks from Celic Dere raised a metochion: adobe cells and a chapel dedicated to the Entry of the Mother of God into the Temple, on 21 November. After 1878, when Dobrogea returned to Romania, the skete became independent. Then the old wooden church was set, dedicated to the Ascension of the Lord, under abbots such as Filimon, with the blessing of Nifon Niculescu.
The stone works and the dedication of the Protection of the Mother of God stretched over 1889 and 1905; the First World War cut them. Today you find a cared-for courtyard, among hills, a stone's throw from Cocoș.
Enter with shoulders covered. The shop at the gate sells honey and candles. If you come at the weekend, avoid midday on the feast: the car park full, a long service; better stay for a coffee in Niculițel and climb in the afternoon.
