Caraorman Forest - between legend and wilderness

History

Caraorman means, from Turkish, “the black forest”. It stands in the south-west of the Delta, between reeds and dune, and has remained hard to reach: almost only by water. Secular oaks, some bent by the wind, come out of the sand as on a dune field, not as in a hill forest.

It is often compared with Letea, but it is less walked and more shaded. The soil is poor, the climate dry for a delta, which is why the trees seem harsher. If you have an extra day at Crișan or Mila 23, ask a boatman for the route here; do not count on a pontoon with hours and a ticket desk.

Wear shoes that hold the sand and keep your distance from horses and nests. In winter it is empty, in summer it is mosquitoes: choose May, June or September.
