Roman Enclosure Wall

History

The enclosure wall of Tomis was raised from the time of Diocletian and continued under Constantine the Great, then patched into the age of Justinian. You are speaking of the third to sixth centuries: the city closed toward the land, with towers and gates, while the sea remained open.

There is no complete reconstruction. You see stretches through the peninsular area, at today’s street level, sometimes built into newer buildings. Historians still discuss the phases; for the visitor what matters is to recognize Roman stone against modern masonry.

A walk through the historic peninsula links the wall to the old buildings, the tourist harbour and the museum. Morning is freer. Do not enter worksites and do not climb onto the coping.
