How a Tatar toponym is written
Many places in Dobrogea have Crimean Tatar names, Turkish names, or both. We write them as they are read on the spot, not “corrected” to sound Romanian. This is not an hour of qırımtatarça.
Towns and market towns
Medgidia is Mecidiye, and was Karasu. Constanța is Köstence on Turkish signs. Babadag is Baba Dağ: ğ lengthens the vowel. Mangalia is Mankalya. Hârșova stays in Romanian; we do not “Tatarise” it.
Villages
Mihail Kogălniceanu was Kara Murat. Ovidiu was Canara. Sarichioi is Sarı Köy — the yellow village — and Сарикёй in speech at Razim. Murfatlar, Cobadin, Techirghiol, Caramurat (on old maps) stay as you find them on the spot, not as a guide would prefer.
On the site
Search synonyms keep the old form, so you can find the page. The endonym, if it is alive, sits under the title: endonym on the village page. We do not invent an alphabet “to look the part”.
