History
After 1878, when Dobrogea returned to Romania, Constanța needed a large church on the peninsula. The Cathedral of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul was raised between 1883 and 1885, to the plans of Alexandru Orăscu, with the support of King Carol I. It is the archiepiscopal church of Tomis, not a neighbourhood chapel.
The Second World War struck the roof and the painting; the rebuilds after 1950 show if you look at the vaults and the iconostasis. Inside, Saints Epictetus and Astion are also honoured, names tied to early Dobrogean Christianity.
It stands a few steps from ancient remains, so you can put it in a morning tour of the peninsula. At the great services it fills; for the rest of the day you go in quietly, with shoulders covered, and go out toward the cliff.
