History
At Plopeni, between the fourth and sixth centuries, a fortification on the late Roman line was in use, then taken over by the Byzantine administration. It guarded roads and villages, not a harbour. On the ground remain stretches of wall and traces of a garrison, not high towers.
The site is understood as a point in a chain: whoever held Plopeni also held movement between settlements. The remains show solid masonry and a military life of duration, with successive rebuilds.
You arrive from the neighbouring villages, ask for the archaeological point, and do not expect tickets or a permanent guide. Combine it with a field day around, not a ten-minute stop from the national road.
