History

Between Medgidia, Murfatlar and the commune of Valu lui Traian, the plain is not straight: a long line of earth and, in places, of stone cuts Dobrogea from the Danube toward the sea. It is not an accident of erosion. These are overlapping defensive works, rebuilt from antiquity into the early Middle Ages, with a parallel ditch and a crest still visible if you walk.

People call them “Trajan’s Wall”, though on the ground there are several alignments: an earth rampart, a stone one, and stretches reused later. The line separated the province of Scythia from the northern plain and slowed cavalry coming down toward the shore; the crest was walked for watch as well.

The commune takes its name from this very line. It is worth a walk with a map or GPS, not a five-minute stop from the road: the relief is read in profile, and in summer the grass covers the crest easily. Bring water, field shoes, and keep off private land.
