History
In 1957 the Dobrogean Opera was founded; a year later the public heard here Johann Strauss’s “Die Fledermaus”. Since then the institution has changed names — Music Theatre, Lyric Theatre, Opera — until it became, in 2004, the “Oleg Danovski” National Theatre of Opera and Ballet.
Danovski held here, from 1975–1978, a ballet company that took Constanța out of provincial anonymity. Into the repertoire entered Verdi, operetta titles and his own choreographies; today’s bill mixes the same type of programme, on a better-equipped stage.
